Am I still a newbie?

Two years ago on June 28th, 2009 I had purchased my very first Blythe doll ever. It was a Cappuccino Chat doll from a now-closed store in Richmond, BC. I got her in person, didn’t have to pay for shipping (but did have to pay taxes) and no waiting around obsessively refreshing the tracking information page to see if the box had been scanned again.

I named her Sophie on the car ride home while I kept on looking at her.

Blythe heads were a lot larger than I thought they would be, based on photos I had seen on the internet.

Last year, during my 365 with Sophie:

126/365 - Happy birthday, Sophie! 7/7

And yesterday, when she got her birthday dress:

Pretty girl

I’ve done a lot since I started in this whirlwind of a hobby. I’ve made friends, expanded my dolly family, sewn a lot, knitted and crocheted a lot, participated in swaps, I went to BlytheCon in Portland, OR. I’ve had a lot of fun over the past two years, and it’s partially thanks to Sophie and her demanding needs for new clothes and shoes. My little fashionista would like to also thank her adoring public for hitting fave on her photos, despite my inabilities to take a decent photograph. And she’s still wondering when she’s going to officially sign with a modelling agency!

Question of the Week: If your dolls could speak.

When I was little, I used to pretend that my stuffed animals and my dolls could speak, at least to me. In my world of make-believe, my dolls spoke to me, they knew what to do when I was sad and, most importantly, they never declined my invitations for a tea party. The beauty of this relationship was that I had secret-keepers who would never tell someone else my secrets, and I provided them with love and care (and the occasional trip through a spin cycle of the washing machine, courtesy of my mom).

If your Blythes could speak to you, what do you think that they would say to you?

Would they demand new clothes? New shoes? Would they ponder why they’ve only had their hair washed once in the three years living with you?

New Events Page

New to BlytheLife.com is the Events page! You can find it by clicking either here or looking over on the list of navigation list on the menu to your right.

My hope is to maintain an up-to-date list of big Blythe events happening in the dolly community right here on BlytheLife.com. So if you’re running a big event or just happen to know about one, let me know! I’ll need to know things like the name of the event, location, date(s) and times, ticket costs and if the event has a website or a Flickr group page (or something), that’d be awesome too!

Events should be fairly open to the public. If your event is happening in your backyard and you’re only inviting your 10 closest Blythe friends, it’s probably not the kind of event that will go onto the Events page for everyone to read about. But if you are organizing a large-scale Blythe event (like what BlytheCon was in Portland, OR!), that’s definitely the kind of event that I want to tell people about!

If you have an event that you would like added, you can email me at michelle@blythelife.com or comment below with the following information:

  • Name of the event
  • Web-link (to the event homepage, Flickr group, etc.)
  • Location
  • Date and time
  • Cost of event ticket – if applicable

BlytheCon 2011: June 20, 2011

BlytheCon 2011 occured this year in Portland, Oregon. It happened on June 20th (Monday) and it was a blast. The venue was Venue Pearl, which was easy enough for me to find from the nearest MAX station. It was so much fun. There were so many people, a lot of vendors and a lot of dolls to see and (politely) drool over.

(If you want to find out more about the photos, click on them and it’ll lead you to the Flickr pages for those photos!)

On Sunday June 19th, there was a Early Bird Meet for those already in Portland for BlytheCon. It was organized by happibug and happened at Director Park. It also happened to be my very first Blythe Meet ever. Here are some of the photos that I took while I was there:

(If you click on the photos, it’ll lead you to the Flickr pages for them where there’s more information – some of the dolls I’m unsure of who they belong to, unfortunately.)
