Question of the Week: The maximum you would spend on a doll?

Whenever I go by the toy department and look at Monster High dolls, I cannot seem to bring myself to fork up the $30 (yes, they’re more expensive in Canada) for one of those dolls. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because I can always go back to the store and buy one? Oh, and then there are Lalaloopsy which retails for around $25+ here. But my first Blythe was $200. To be fair, they’re all dolls. What’s the big deal about spending $30 on a doll?

I enjoy the rarity of Blythe, even though sometimes it feels like that everyone and their mother has the same stock dolls as me in their collections. I enjoy the fact that not everyone knows what a Blythe is. I enjoy that aspect of it.

But it has still made me reluctant to buy a $30 doll. Which seems strange to me because I’ve spent much more than that on a Blythe. For the cost of my first Blythe, I could have purchased nearly 7 of them. That’s a lot of Monsters. But there’s something very special about Blythe that just commands access to my wallet (unfortunately). Which is likely why I had absolutely no problems forking up the money for a Kenner. Suddenly it seems like such a great deal because, you know, Kenners are expensive! So for non-Blythes, I’m just down-right unable to pay for them. I freeze a few steps away from the dolls aisle and just put the boxes back, somewhat reluctantly. I love admiring them, but I’m afraid that they won’t be as loved in my dolly family as the Blythes are. Even though I’ve recently added my first ball-jointed doll to the mix, Blythe is still my number one.

What is the maximum you would spend on a doll?

Hi! I just wanted to say I adore your blog, and I am also a Canadian Blythe enthusiast!
And, I also can’t seem to buy any other dolls available on store shelves. Well I do call myself a doll collector, people assume that means Barbie dolls, or just any old doll. I think I’d rather drop 100$ on a Blythe, or Pullip than a Monster High doll.
I think it may because of my fascination with Japanese culture, but it’s also nice [like you said] to collect something not everyone is familiar with…

Anyways thanks for the informative posts, and keep up the good work!

Always nice to know that there’s more Canadian Blythe enthusiasts out there 🙂 There’s quite a few Blythe groups in Canada, if you haven’t already found them on Flickr!

When it comes to Blythe, I just keep pushing my limit, lol. I’m pretty certain I more or less hit it for my Kenner – I can see paying slightly over that for a super super minty, but not much. I have slightly different spending standards for Kenners to Neos though, much as I love customs, I don’t have the custom bug enough to spend big bucks on any of those… whereas my limit for stock Neo girls is still quite high, for example, my Goldie. 🙂 But not quite in the same league as my kenner spending!

And yet I too deliberate for AGES over cheaper store-bought dollies. Weird, isn’t it? Although, I do have 8 Monster High, so I guess I didn’t deliberate too much, lol!

Ahhh, none of my dolls cost as much as my Kenner. If one of them did, she’d better be another Kenner! (I’m so wishing for a blonde or a raven/brunette right now… Your blondie Rose doesn’t help matters much, I’m afraid!)

I’m still deliberating over Monster High… I really do want a Lagoona, but the one that I want (the classroom/science set) is never in stock in stores when I go :/
