Question of the Week: Are your doll’s clothes on hangers?

I adore the look of doll clothes on little hangers. It’s quite a sweet sight to see, small works of sewn art on dainty hangers. But I have to admit that it sounds a little tedious and impractical when you have a lot of doll clothes or no where to hang it from. But I do adore the look of it, because it is really cute. I’m personally limited by space (and also a severe lack of hangers or something to hang the little hangers from). If I could, I probably would have some kind of small dowel set up to hang little dresses off of. Or at least have small dress forms to show off an outfit or two as some doll dresses are amazingly detailed and I consider them to be works of art and I’d love to show them off.

So while I’m unfortunately limited on space, my dolls’ clothing remains in plastic drawers. Each drawer has its own purposes (tops, bottoms, dresses, hats & hair, shoes, stock). I have 2 sets of drawers (with 3 drawers per set). It’s a lot of space for dolly clothing, but I’m afraid that it can be a bit time consuming at times to go through all the dolly things that I have to find an outfit that goes well. Maybe that could be fixed if I had everything out on hangers…? Or maybe I’d just end up spending even more time going through doll clothing as it’d just all be more easily accessible for doing up with different combinations of clothes. What a little conundrum I’ve caught myself in!

Are your doll’s clothes on hangers? How do you store them?

Currently they are all in a giant toybox but I did actually go on ebay and buy about 100 tiny coathangers a few weeks ago. I do plan to set up some kind of rail in my bookshelf to hang them all on. Also my Takara carry case has a little rail to hang clothes on, this is what inspired me, they look so CUTE.

I saw photos of your Takara Blythe carry case, it’s SO cute. I’d love to get one some day, it looks very, very cute. But who would I choose to go into it? Such first world problems I have!

I found a Barbie wardrobe on eBay for about $6. It’s ADORABLE, and came with some hangars, though I’ve already ran out of them and space. I plan on making a few out of wire though. I use the bottom for shoes and there’s a little drawer for stockings. It started out, and all their other items are in a big box. Ideally I’d love to have a bookshelf or more place on my dresser for them but I have mischievous cats. But the little clothes, especially handmade ones, look so much cuter on hangars. It really emphasizes the bittyness and cuteness of them all.

That sounds awesome 😀 And such a great price for a doll wardrobe too! I don’t have kitties (fortunately? unfortunately?) so I don’t have that to worry about 😉

I too love the look of dolly clothes on hangers. I’ve been planning to attempt making a hanging rail out of dowelling and thin plywood and then crafting little hangers in wire… but who knows if I’ll get around to it! i also wondered about mounting a dowel rail in a box file and hanging the clothes inside to make them easier to store :/

That is definitely something that I want to do one day, when I have more room for it. I don’t know if that’d be a good or a bad thing though – being able to see all my dolls’ clothing. It might make me go “Hmm, I don’t have that in *this* colour yet, time to go shopping!” 😉

My stepmother gave me a really great idea. She goes to second hand stores and buys those old wooden or fiberboard jewelry boxes. They look like miniature fancy wardrobes and closets. Most of them are about 1:6 scale, and many of them have mirrors, drawers, and fancy detail work on them too. I want to get several of them and some little hangers, take out the interior hooks, put in dowels, get some little dress forms (Murimika by Bandai makes some) and put my girls to work in their own little dress shop. Fun!

That is a great idea! I see little fancy jewellery boxes at thrift stores all the time. A lot of them have cute drawers with ring holders that I bet could be gutted and revarnished/painted for holding small doll things 🙂
