Question of the Week: Are there any “original” names left?

The Kenners, today.

I’ve been spending some time working on my two February acquisitions lately (TLC Kenners that need some work!) and I began to think about doll names. Now the brunette got her name very early on. She ‘spoke’ to me, probably because I wasn’t going to do a lot with her (besides giving her some legs, which I did) and she wasn’t going to go through some big change. I think that’s why she told me her name. But the blonde? She murmured something, but is refusing to confirm her name until after she’s all restored and ready to show herself off to the world.

Non-dolly people are going to think that I’m insane, but you all know what I mean. Personalities and all that.

I was really thinking about how many ‘original’ names there are left (probably a lot), but at the same time…. Does it matter if your Blythe is the only Blythe ever with a certain name? Does it really matter?

I personally don’t think so. I think that dolls could be named anything, and it doesn’t matter. Because what matters is the personality that we give them, the photos, the stories, the way we make them ours. That’s what really matters. I think that a name is just part of the story, but what we inject into the dolls, what we give them, it’s makes a huge difference in how I look at dolls, especially on Flickr.

Sometimes, a doll has an original name, but then it’s like, ehh, there’s no photos, no personality. Then a doll can have a run of the mill name and be so interesting. In part because of her owner, her story, her photos, her personality that’s invoked in the photos. I think, just like with people, names don’t matter as much as a personality does.

That said, Miss Blondie Kenner is still holding out on telling me her name…

Are there any “original” names left in Blytheworld? Does it matter?

I like giving my dolls unusual or complex names – maybe it’s partly because my own name is like that too. I don’t think it would matter to me if someone else’s doll has the same name; I honestly never thought about it before.

I’m at the beginning of a project that will involve customizing and photographing lots of dolls, and so far I’ve had the idea for what “characters” each doll will portray before I even start working on them. Their names and their looks come to me as part of my mind’s associations about those characters and scenes.

Right now I’ve got Zenobia (my mini-me), Loubitha Tabouise (my cobbled-together little frankendolly) and Sally But They Call Her Cleo. In the works is Rosaline Crashblossom, and the next one will be Bluzette. My project will also include a few boy dolls, but as yet I’m having a hard time thinking up any boy names.

I love hearing what other people have named their dolls!

LOL, Sally But They Call Her Cleo! Does she go by Cleo, or SBTCHC?

Hee, most of the time right now she seems like a Sally – but I’ll be giving her new hair soon, so we’ll see if that lets out her Cleo side. 🙂

I like giving my dolls name that reflect their personality or their looks. For example, my Adalind is a look-a-like from the TV show Grimm, and I haven’t seen that around. I also have three girls named after songs, Lola, Rhiannon and Quinn, and then I let my boyfriend name one.

On the other hand, it seems like everyone has a doll named Zoe!

I try to name them after things or people I like…. for example I love art so I have a Vangogh and a Ryden. I couldn’t believe “Sophia bubbles” was available…atleast I dont think anyone has named their blythe that name. Maybe I’m the first? It’s the name of a girl in a Mark Ryden painting. I used it on my white hair factory blythe ;P I also go by their hair color, personality, or facial expression. I like when boy names are used, like Poe, Edgar, Burton..etc.

I’ve had my first Blythe for over a year now, (also added 9 more dolls to the collection) (I have a lot of fakies to know for sure that I like Blythe)
But only today she told me her name.
She’s the sweetest of the bunch, the only one who seems to smile. Since she was my first one, I thought Blythe would work. She’s my original Blythe do her name is Blythe lol.
    I like the name anyways.
The only doll who has spoken to me loud and clear is my middie, Tillie May. She’s the sassiest girl you’ll ever meet and she has the smirk to show it.
