Treasures For Dollars is a mini-series that is completely focused on things that I actually find (and buy) from dollar stores and other similar stores. It will alternate with Blythe On A Budget articles for the next little while until the finale of the mini-series (at Part 10). I hope you enjoy the series!
I frequent dollar stores often. There’s always something new that they didn’t have last time. I strolled through on November 1st to see if there were any Halloween goods to be had at a discounted price (and they didn’t disappoint! Four items for a dollar, previous price a day or two ago was at a dollar). But there was nothing that I really wanted to get, plus their cute stockings were still at $6 a pair (seriously, six for a pair of stockings that I’d probably get a run in under six wears). But I went down their hair accessories aisle, because that’s where the gems are. I don’t look at the more adult hair accessories because they’re usually larger, darker and not the right scale for Blythe.
I found these excellent little plastic hair elastics. I know non-dolly people use them for the ends of braids or whatnot, but they’re perfect for dolly hair (since they’re small) but also for a quick-fix for loose hips (you put the elastic into the hip joint of where the doll’s leg meets the pelvis to tighten up the joint). And at 750 pieces (I didn’t count…) for a dollar, can you really go wrong?

Like most Blythe enthusiasts, I spend quite a bit of time looking at photos of Blythes or Blythe clothing or Blythe shoes. It’s just the way that the hobby works out, what with so many people on Flickr posting photos all the time. One type of photo that I’ve always really liked is photos of their dolls (especially Kenners!) in curlers.
I’ve looked for curlers everywhere but I wasn’t about to shell out the $5+ per package of foam hair curlers that the beauty/hair department wanted in a department store.
Besides the price, the rollers were quite large and there were 20+ in a package. I don’t know about your Blythe’s head, but mine’s not that big (ego notwithstanding). But I went to the dollar store a little while ago and found packages of small(er) foam rollers at $1 per package with 8 rollers per pack. While I wasn’t entirely sure if 8 would be enough, I opted to get two packages. They were nice and small (at least compared to the more pricier ones found elsewhere) and I was able to get a smaller amount (I don’t need 20+ rollers that are too big for a doll’s head!).
For the size (and what I needed them for), they work really well! And since I only spent $2 on curlers in total, that’s definitely nothing to complain about.

Despite the occasional time that my room looks incredibly messy, I do like having some order and organization in my life and that goes for my dolls as well. Whenever I go to a meet, a doll (or two) is either in a carrier or wrapped in a shirt and just put into my bag. Any other extra dolly stuff (clothes, shoes, etc.) are just tossed into my purse as well. I decided that really had to end.
One of the nice things about make-up bags is that small ones (handy for holding doll clothes and shoes) are fairly inexpensive. I can find them at my local dollar store for a buck each or you can also get them for free at make-up counters when you’re buying over a certain price limit. Luckily for me, my mom likes to buy pricey cleansers (the inexpensive ones literally make her have a rash) so whenever there’s a promotion of free make-up bag with goodies, she buys what she wants and whoever in the house wants it, can have the goodies. It’s technically not ‘free’ since it is with a purchase, but for a great organizational bag, who am I to say no? Bonus, it fits everything that I took along on my last meet: extra hair ties, clear plastic elastics for keeping shoes on, and a few extra hats in case someone wanted to smoosh down their hair.

Hello everyone and welcome to the second instalment of Treasures for Dollars! Just this past weekend I was in a small dollar store that had just opened up and was having a grand opening sale. While it has a lot of things that other dollar store have (cards, party supplies, inexpensive toys and goody bag favours), it also had quite the houseware selection as well as a craft section! But what I was looking for were these:
This card of small metal hair clips were $0.75 (regular price $1, but it was a sale!). So for $0.75 (+ tax), I got all of these little hair clippies which I thought was a pretty good deal. They’re cute, to-scale when put up against a Blythe’s head, and plus the paint on them is pretty decent – doesn’t scratch off easily at all. I think I may decorate them at a later date (maybe glue some bows or something onto them).

Treasures For Dollars is a new mini-series that does belong in the Blythe On A Budget article series but is completely focused on things that I actually find (and buy) from dollar stores and other similar stores. I’m a sucker for all things cute – which is probably why I have a half-dozen Blythes! I like small things, but haven’t managed to get sucked into buying re-ment by the crate (yet). I’m always on the look-out for small cute things that are in the right scale for Blythe as I don’t collect other dolls. One of my favourite recent finds was actually purchased back in August when I went to a local dolly meet.
We met up in the food court of a mall to hang out – we all shopped at the mall, bought mildly overpriced food at the mall and just hung around and had a great time. There’s a store in the mall (Daiso) which is a lot like a dollar store, but most everything in the store is priced at $2 with some exceptions (food is priced below or above $2, some larger items are priced higher/accordingly). And I picked up this little gem there…
Isn’t it cute? I’m really glad that I got it back in August, I went to the store again just on Monday and they did not have it in stock anymore – they did have the same item but in silver instead of black. It’s super cute and a little bit large for Blythe’s hands, but I really just wanted it as a charm for one of my doll’s pullstrings and it’s a good scale in comparison to the size of their rather large heads (ego??). The nice thing is that it already comes on a string so I can easily connect it to my doll’s existing pull string or use the string for another project.
