Question of the Week: Cost of your first doll?

Some people find Blythes in thrift stores for a few bucks. Others got their first Blythes back in 1972. And then there are some who pay retail (or above retail!) prices for Takara or Ashton-Drake Galleries Blythes. However you got your first doll, it all varies from person to person.
My first Blythe was Cappuccino Chat. At the time I didn’t really frequent the buy-sell-trade forums enough but I did know about eBay! I first called up a local (sort of) store that I knew carried Blythe and I wrote down which ones they had, and at what prices, and then I looked them up online. At the time $1 Canadian was < $1 American, and their Prima Dolly selection was much too overpriced. It was down to between Cappuccino Chat and Sunshine Holiday at the time. But the cost of Sunshine Holiday was (in Canadian) higher than what the doll was going for on eBay (in USD). But Cappuccino Chat? She was lower in CAD than what she was going for on eBay in USD (shipping not included yet). I figured with taxes, that’d be about the same as tacking on shipping – so when my family decided to drive out in that direction, I went straight to the store, told the sales associate what I wanted and soon I was handing over my credit card and getting my very first Blythe doll in my hands. She was $200 CAD + 12% tax. Cappuccino Chat can be found stock (and nude) for a little bit less now, but I love her all the same.
What did you pay for your first Blythe doll?
I remember spending hours looking through the Blythe-o-pedia on This Is Blythe to make absolutely sure I picked the right Blythe for me as I was only going to ever get one. I chuckle to think about it now of course!
I eventually chose Rainy Day Parade and paid £114 for her. I can remember my mum shouting down the phone “You’ve paid £114 for a doll?!” When she arrived however, she changed her tune to “She’s the most beautiful doll in the world!”. Now she collects Blythe too 😀
I think I paid a little over the odds at the time but I was blissfully unaware and happy with my purchase which is the main thing I suppose!
I can’t remember the exact price now but it was definitely under 130 for my MSR. I remember I first found a seller on TIB but they were taking ages to reply to me, so I browsed ebay with Rob.. Then we saw a MSR listed at a much lower price than the rest and had to get her!
In 2005 I bought my first Blythe, Lounging Lovely for £60 on eBay. At the time I thought that was a lot of money but looking back that seems cheap!
I think it was about $150 for my Angelica Eve (back in Nov 08!) I was completely overwhelmed at the time, hahahah. Oh how little I knew about spending money… 😛
I just looked it up…I also went through ebay because I had no shops around that sold Blythe and hadn’t joined the forums and such. I paid $105.00 plus $30 in shipping for my Cassiopeia Spice.
I bought my Vea…an ADG for $100.00…. I know I could have done better but I fell in love and love is priceless!
My MSR was $150 NRFB I think (seems unbelievable now) in Dec 2008, but that’s not including shipping! In the same order I got a nude Prima Dolly Ashletina for about $90.
I bought my first doll a month ago for my upcoming 21st birthday, She was AUD$362 Le Jardin de Maman (LJM) NRFB. I can’t wait to open her in 2 weeks!!! I only spent that much because she was a 21st present and she was the very first doll I saw.
My Mum went a bit nuts when she found out the price and suggested that she could sew me a doll that looked “just the same”… She is very cute my Mum. But she has come around too and is now making cloths for her to wear.
