Question of the Week: Handmade vs. Bought?

I try to make as much of my dolls’ wardrobe as I possible can. I’m a huge fan of most things crafty and I have been slowly (and slightly expensively) amassing a stash of fabric, ribbons, trims, snaps, eyes and hooks, lace, elastic and so many different colours of thread! While I don’t sew an awful lot (I humbly bow to those who sew on a daily or nearly daily basis for their dolls – it’s hard to find the time when I alternate between full time school and full time work!), I do try to sew as much as I can. I’m not very big on sewing a lot, but when I can, I participate in swaps with other people in the Blythe community. That way my dolls don’t get sick of just things made by me all the time and I can make things for someone else, which is always really fun.

Right now, I would say that 90% of the hats we have are made by me, 0.1% of the shoes are made by me and the clothes are maybe at 33% handmade by me (the rest is a mixture of stock, bought and swapped). I do hope to increase the number of handmade-by-me clothes hopefully over the course of this summer (I do have a lot of fabric that shouldn’t just be sitting around!).

What estimated percentage of your dolls’ clothing is made by you? How much of it was bought or swapped for?

Question of the Week: If your dolls could speak.

When I was little, I used to pretend that my stuffed animals and my dolls could speak, at least to me. In my world of make-believe, my dolls spoke to me, they knew what to do when I was sad and, most importantly, they never declined my invitations for a tea party. The beauty of this relationship was that I had secret-keepers who would never tell someone else my secrets, and I provided them with love and care (and the occasional trip through a spin cycle of the washing machine, courtesy of my mom).

If your Blythes could speak to you, what do you think that they would say to you?

Would they demand new clothes? New shoes? Would they ponder why they’ve only had their hair washed once in the three years living with you?

Question of the Week: Your Mini-Me?

With so many Blythes with varying hair colours, part lines and cuts, it’s not difficult to find a doll that looks close to you. Eye chips can be changed to match your own ‘chips’, clothes can be altered and sewn to match your own sense of style. But the hair… Pretty much all natural hair shades are represented with Blythe, and even some unnatural hair shades.

What I would like to know this week is:

Who’s your Blythe mini-me? Do the two of you dress alike (if you own her)?

My mini-me is Love Mission, I haven’t had the courage yet to give her brown chips to match mine. We don’t really dress alike, but that’s because she lacks shyness and I don’t.

Best. Minion. EVER!

Question of the Week: Underthings

BlytheLife is getting a little saucy this week with a question about your doll’s underthings.

Older (but not vintage) releases of Blythes came with matching undies and bra sets, some of them were even very impressive and resembled lingerie (Rouge Noir, I’m looking at you!). Most dolls now come with plain white undies that are simple, let very boring. So this week’s question is…

What do your dolls wear? Do you have them wear stock undies? Or perhaps you buy up the older release undies for them? Or perhaps they go commando?

All of my dolls wear stock undies except for Belarus (Love Mission). Her stock ones were red and were original on her over protective plastic (her entire box outfit was red, red, red) and because I don’t feel like having her semi-permanently stained with a reddish rash, she goes without.

Question of the Week: BlytheCon or …?

In just two weeks, BlytheCon 2011 will be happening out in Portland, Oregon.

I know a lot of Blythe fans are super excited about BlytheCon happening stateside this year and I, for one, am excited that it’s on the west coast! For those that don’t know, I live in British Columbia, Canada. Which is about a small hop and skip away from Portland (for the geographically challenged, BC is right above Washington state, which is right above Oregon) and that means that I will be there and I’m so looking forward to meeting people who are also dolly-minded.

A side note: If you want to look for me, I’m going to make it super easy for you to find me – I’ll be the doll crazy girl holding onto two Blythes. Oh wait, that’ll be most people there! I’ll have to think of some way to make me easily identifiable.

This week’s question of the week:

Are you attending BlytheCon on June 20th? If you are – how many dolls are going with you? If you’re not – are you going to be do a Blythe Meet around that date for a mini-BlytheCon?
