Thoughts on… Anniversary Dolls

When it comes to new releases in the world of Blythe, it takes something with a bit of ‘wow’ factor to draw me in these days. Maybe it’s because my doll family has grown to the point where I’m very happy with the mix, or because there’s just so many dolls and limited space that I’m forced to be more and more selective. Regardless of why it is, I have exactly zero anniversary dolls.

For those who are new to Blythe, the following are anniversary dolls:

  • 2002 – Miss Anniversary
  • 2003 – Courtney Tez by Nike
  • 2004 – Art Attack
  • 2005 – Cinema Princess
  • 2006 – Darling Diva
  • 2007 – Princess a la Mode
  • 2008 – Christina the Bride and Eleanor the Forest Dancer
  • 2009 – Fashion Obsession Jenna
  • 2010 – Marabelle Melody
  • 2011 – Ten Happy Memories
  • 2012 – Red Delicious
  • 2013 – Allie Gabrielle
  • 2014 – Regina Erwen

I’ve been in the hobby since 2009, when Fashion Obsession Jenna came out. There were murmurs of displeasure that the anniversary doll was yet another blonde – at the time it seemed like every other doll being produced was a blonde. Marabelle Melody only intrigued me because she was released with a trio of skater superheros (I have both Simply Sparkly Spark and Simply Bubble Boom).  Ten Happy Memories, while I appreciated the sentiment of having a trio of anniversary dolls (Neo, Middie and Petite), was lost on me. I just wasn’t interested.

I think one of the anniversary dolls that I do actually regret not attempting to get was Red Delicious. I had the luxury of seeing one in person in late 2013 and she was gorgeous. But there is a lot of hair, and I already have a lot of dolls with a lot of hair. Allie Gabrielle was a yawn to me, until I saw photos out of the box. I’m not entirely sure who the CWC has taking their photos anymore, but more care could be taken to make the dolls look more attractive to potential buyers! And that leads us to Regina Erwen.

Regina Erwen has some foiled chips, coloured eyelids, special lashes and, looking at the photos, it looks like she comes with some higher quality underpants than what some recent releases have come with! Unfortunately, I am just not drawn to her. Maybe it’s the fact that I’ve become more fickle with my dolly buying, or because I’m jaded from the quality of the dolls that I had unboxed last year. I’m not sure what it is, but I do not that I’m not particularly enamored enough with the doll to buy her. Or maybe it’s when I look back at older releases, I’m suddenly smacked in the face with the fact that newer anniversary (and regular) releases of Blythe just don’t come with as much stuff anymore. Not that it’s all about the clothes (although, really it is), but many of the older anniversary releases came with not just one outfit, but multiple. Often two, sometimes more. While the newer released anniversary dolls don’t tempt me as much, I would love to get my hands on Art Attack one of these days – with every single one of her individually boxed outfits.

Who’s your favourite anniversary doll? Do you own any?

Dolls and Work, Work and Dolls

Part of my cubicle wall :)

It comes that time of year again when I’m juggling a few aspects of my life. Full-time student (summer classes!) and, very briefly, full-time work. Granted, I am doing office work for a few weeks, so I’m blessed with the ability to sit in an air-conditioned environment with a desk, a computer, and a office-mate who shares chocolate. Most of the people that I work with are aware of my Blythe hobby, it’s because I’ve previously covered my cubicle wall with Blythe photographs, and postcards, as well as bringing in dolls themselves. But it’s been a while since I’ve worked (read: full-time student), but my course load is low enough, and I’m in need of some income, that I’m attempting to balance my life:

Full-time (distance-education) classes + full-time work + dedicating time to other projects.

Eden, bored at work.

While there’s only so many hours in a day, and everyone gets the same twenty-four, I’ve found myself dedicating what seems to be less time sleeping and more doing just about everything else. Short of looking myself up at a caffeinated IV drip, I’m taking power naps on public transit and getting my energy where I can (hello, snacks in the afternoon!). And since I’m only temporarily working, I’m not going to be completely covering my desk with dolls and doll paraphernalia, although I am tempted. I don’t have a cubicle wall to tack photos onto this summer, but I do have a desk, and dolls sit pretty well on desks! I don’t think my office-mate will mind too much, despite the fact that I’m making his office “entirely too feminine” just with my mere presence.

Ways I’ve though of incorporating dolls into my (very temporary) work space include:

  • Changing my desktop image to one of a Blythe
  • Bringing in a doll on a daily basis to have at my desk
  • Knit for dollies on my lunch break (therefore, I must have a dolly model)
  • Change my office-mate’s desktop image to that one of a Blythe (erm, probably not this one…)

QOTW: Who was your latest doll purchase?

With there being a non-stop influx of new dolls into the market, Takaras and TBLs, it seems like there’s always somebody out there making a preorder, winning an auction, or slyly doing a bulk order of TBLs somewhere. There’s all sorts of places that you can find Blythe now too, you’re not limited to ‘official’ channels when it comes to wanting to find an older doll, or a customized doll. There’s many favourites, and perhaps you’re out looking for a Middie instead of a Neo, or you have your eyes on a Petite. And as someone who’s been woefully not buying new dolls (out of financial necessity), I’m curious about who your latest doll purchase was!

Cedar-bunny

The last Blythe that I purchased was Cedar, my Monique Magnifique, back in the summer of 2013. She doesn’t get nearly enough camera time as she should though, she’s has some gorgeously coloured hair and I still need to figure out her personality. So more time with her is much needed! The last doll I purchased, however, was a pink Petworks Usaggie, who is still a little bit nameless!

Bun :)

Who was your latest doll purchase? (Share photos, if you can!)
