Sunshine! Daylight for Photos!

I love spring and daylight savings and all the things that brings sunshine to me earlier and longer. I love sunshine. It makes for better photos outdoors, better photos indoors (when the curtains are open), and overall a better mood to be in. While I adore winter and the chilly air and the snow (which we did not get a lot of in my part of British Columbia – I’m rubbing it in, I know), there’s nothing that beats sunshine and the warmth of the sun’s rays on my face.

Sunshine, however, can be bad for Blythe. Hair colours can fade or change (Miss Sally Rice, anyone?) and it can also fade stock or custom face-ups (boo!). But it makes for a great addition for photos and making colours so much better in photographs. Gotta love it!

Daylight, natural light, is always best for photos. I find that artificial light can alter colours in photos from their true selves. Of course, I can always correct these using Photoshop (something I do use when editing my photos). It’s nice to have to do as much work with an image before using it though, because it just makes my life a lot easier! Three cheers for sunshine and better photos!

Wow! I had no idea that Blythe doll hair colors fade in the sunlight. I’ve been lecturing my better-off-and-can-afford-designer-dolly-clothes friends on the proper way to store their dollies’ designer duds for awhile. But it never occurred to me that the face colors and hair would fade as well. I have a small dolly family, so each has their own little trunk with their clothing and accessories. I even put those little humidity-fighting packets in each trunk. The dolls, meanwhile, spend most of their time in a cabinet-style dollhouse, protected from light, nieces and nephews and jealous kitties.

They do get out for photos, however, and, yes, I am enjoying longer hours of daylight because I am not a morning person (neither are my dolls).

Some dolls hair are known to fade or discolour over time – most notable is Miss Sally Rice and some Simply Peppermints. It is not *all* dolls. Face-ups can fade with sun exposure, but that also happens for a lot of other things too (posters, art work, etc.) This would be with long-term exposure though, like having a doll on a shelf that was constantly in the sun day-in and day-out.

What causes yellowing on a doll? I’m not talking about Kenners – but I had a 2nd-hand Fru Pu who’d started discolouring on the side of her nose.

Hi Gillian – yellowing in plastics has to do with age, exposure to sun or heat. A lot of older plastic dolls will discolour with time. EBLs, while not terribly old, are upwards of 10+ years old now. Plastics manufacturers know more about plastics and degradation now than they did before, plus companies that manufacture toys aren’t likely to use the same UV protection additives as companies who make plastic items that are designed to be outdoors. I actually have an upcoming post about yellowing, so there’ll be more information there 🙂

Hi Michelle – thanks for the info – I somehow didn’t expect a non-Kenner to yellow. I look forward to the upcoming post. 🙂
