sneak peek

Recently my 5 year old daughter, Ava, broke her arm and ended up having to have a 4 hour surgery to correct it. In the process her Median nerve was damaged and she has lost movement and feeling in her index finger and thumb on her dominant hand. We have no idea how long this will take to heal or if she will ever fully recover. Unfortunately we don’t have medical insurance and the hospital bills are ongoing and extremely overwhelming.

In order to raise money to help pay her bills I am raffling off a custom doll by me, Kaleidoscope Kustoms. The Blythe community has been really amazing and has come together to donate a ton of awesome items that will be included with this girl.  Tickets are $10 each. There is no limit on how many you purchase, any and all donations are greatly appreciated by my family and Ava. You can purchase the tickets on my blog Kaleidoscope Kustoms thru the store located above my blog posts.

Once all of the donation items have been received I will announce a date for the raffle drawing, which Ava will be doing a video of her picking the lucky winner out of a hat. All of this information will be posted on my blog in the upcoming days.

Finding My Fairy Girl

I opened the plain brown box with the anticipation of a child on Christmas morning. My heart raced. Cutting through the tape carefully so I would not accidentally nick what was inside, I grinned and felt a little silly at my excitement. I removed the tissue paper used as packing, and there it was… there SHE was looking up at me through the cellophane window with light pink eyes, the whisper of a smile on her pale pink lips.

#1 Shaylee in box

I am sure those of you reading this can relate to the feeling that comes with opening your first Blythe. If you had told me a few years ago, that I would be so enthralled with a doll, I would want to own one…at my age…I never would have believed you.

I met Blythe late one night while visiting one of my favorite blogs, “One Crafty Mumma” by Melissa Goodsell. She posted about a strange little doll with a large head and changeable eyes that her daughter had received. I had never seen one before and I was more than curious who she was. To be honest, I was put off at first. Her eyes were, you must admit, a little creepy. However, I took the subject and ran with it. Searching well into the night about the odd little gal that no one really wanted in 1972.

It didn’t take long for me to be ensnared in her web of cute. And yes, I grew to see the beauty in her coy glance and pursed lips. The proportions of her head to her body didn’t seem so odd to me, the more I looked at her. I was absolutely amazed at all of the variations people had achieved when customizing her. She looked almost alive in some cases.

I could not afford to spend hundreds of dollars on a doll…for myself, so I started looking at other, more affordable dolls. The first one I found was a thrift shop find, a vintage, bubble cut Barbie. I snatched her up and proceeded to add to my budding collection by following her up with a “Bratzillaz, Meyganna” doll, who has amazing eyes and horrible hair, and then a “China Girl” doll, from “Oz the Great and Powerful.” I also found a “Littlest Pet Shop Blythe” on the clearance shelf, but no matter how many inexpensive, albeit cute dolls I purchased my longing for a Neo Blythe doll would not go away.

#2 Shaylee and Barbie

I searched…and researched…and “watched” on eBay to see what the girls went for, hoping that one day I would discover that treasure meant for me. And then finally, one night, I found her.

She was not the most desirable girl or so I read. In fact, there were many bad reviews about her horrible curly hair and her extreme downward gaze, but she was the right price for me and I loved her coloring.

“Fairy Girl” was her nick name and “Silver Snow” is what they called her. Her long blonde hair seemed to change color in different lighting and her pale lips and lavender eye shadow were sweet and natural looking. I knew she wouldn’t be perfect, but she would be the perfect first doll for me. I held my breath and clicked “Purchase” and she was mine.

So why are these girls so interesting and hard to forget? Is it their large heads full of hair just begging to be styled, or is it their unusual eyes that are so innocent and expressive? I’m sure it’s different for everyone. For me it brings back the days when I was a girl. I would spend hours in my room playing with Barbie and my other dolls. Blythe replays those happy memories, of childhood and innocence, and of when all I had to worry about was what happened to Barbie’s other pink shoe. Is it ridiculous and pointless to play with dolls at my age? Probably… but hey, I am an adult and I can do what I want. Thankfully, there are thousands of other adults like me, who can’t wait to get out the little hair brush and tiny clothes, and sit down to play if just for a few moments. I see nothing wrong with that.

As for my collection…I’m seriously ogling a custom girl from SoulGirlDolls or a stock Snowflake Sonata (a nod to my days as a dancer) So far, my husband hasn’t asked what that odd doll is doing up there above the fireplace. I suppose when there are two or three up there; I’ll have to admit my addiction. For now, I’ll just keep it to myself…and share it with the community of Blythe lovers out there. Thanks for understanding!

smidge house press release

Hello, Everyone!

Michelle has been kind enough to give me this platform to announce my Blythe related news. So, for those of you who may not have heard, the Smidge House Etsy Shop will be closing it’s doors for good on Friday, May 20, 2011.

It’s been a wonderful adventure, and I have loved designing and creating 1/6 size goodies for people who love them as much as I do! It’s also led me to fall in love with Blythe, and create things with her in mind, which has added so much to the fun! As much as I will miss the shop, and being able to share my work with all of you, it’s time for me to move on. Happily, I will still be working in sixth scale, designing small scale sets for television and film. 🙂

I’d like to thank all of you for the love and support you have shown me and the Smidge House shop for the last year and a half. I’ve met some amazing and talented people, and certainly some lifelong friends. 🙂 I appreciate your kind words, your encouragement, and of course, your business, more than I could ever hope to express! And, of course, I thank you for sharing your love of Blythe, which has drained my bank account, but left me very happy, lol!

If you would like to grab some goodies for your Blythe dolls before I close up shop, please feel free to use the coupon code BLYTHE10 at checkout to receive 10% off all of your purchases.

If you would like to keep up with me during my new adventures, feel free to follow along on the Smidge House blog: http://smidgehouse.blogspot.com. I will continue to update when I have 1/6 related news to share.

Big hugs to you all, and I hope you have enjoyed shopping at Smidge House!

Luv,
Carmen AKA smidge girl

Help for Alissia

alissia

First thing, I want to thank Michelle for being kind enough to offer to put this on BlytheLife.com. You might remember who we are; we were the first give away on here – a Rob & Sioux headband set give away. This time we are here asking for a bit of help.

Last year Rob’s little three year old little niece, Alissia, became extremely ill. After several trips to the hospital, doctors decided to perform a CT scan and they found a tumor in her brain. Alissia was flown to another hospital via helicopter and had emergency surgery. It was quite a difficult surgery and later the doctors discovered that the tumor was cancerous. Alissia was diagnosed with a very rare and rapid growing form of brain cancer.

Alissia is very strong and the doctors and nurses are amazed by her. They tell her parents how astonishing it is because most children going through what she is do not have her energy and strength.

Unfortunately, in these past few weeks Alissia has been having very difficult treatments and tests. Alissia will need a stem cell transplant very soon. This is why we’re here. Over the weekend, I (Sioux) set up a small donation site with Alissia’s father and mother and her uncle, Rob.

If you would like to donate or spread the word Alissia’s donation site is located here: For Alissia (4alissia.blogspot.com).

Thank you all so much for your time and generosity

xoxo
