Middie Monday #9

It’s February! The misses Kitty Brighton and Lydia Melbourne have been deeply engrossed in flipping through my copy of This is Blythe recently. They are both shocked and confused (and also concerned!) about the sheer lack of Middies in this book. This is Blythe was published pre-Takara and Ashton-Drake Galleries manufactured dolls, so it’s no wonder that my lovely Middies are not seeing images representing them in the book!

Middies, the perpetual middle-sized “sister” to Blythe, didn’t come into existence until 2010 when Macaron Q-Tea Party was released in October. Like a gangly teenager, Middie is an awkward size for some collectors. Not only can Blythe not readily share shoes, but clothing is a bit of an issue for Middies as well. Some Blythe tops can work as Middie dresses, but they do still look oversized in a way that may not always be cute. Luckily, Kelly shoes have (for the most part) remained relatively inexpensive and they fit Middies well! There’s no shortage of cute shoes there, although it’s often the same styles over and over again in different colours.

The inquiring minds of Middies want to know where you get your Middie-sized shoes, because my Middies routinely suffer from what they feel is a lack of shoes all day long.

It’s been an awesome 8 months having a dedicated day for Middies! I’ve been trying to focus a bit on Blythe’s middle sister because she seems so underrated at times. My Middie-related goal of crafting their wardrobe still remains the same, which means the poor dears have been wearing the same outfits for quite a while now and often rotate between the small handful of outfits that I do have for them. It’s hard though, finding time to craft for them because the little sleeves are a bit fiddly and (if I’m being completely honest) I prefer knitting socks for me over clothes for them – if only because I actually feel changes in temperature and I adore wool socks versus the Middies being made of plastic and not actually being able to care about weather and temperature changes. (Sorry if I burst anyone’s bubble, but that’s the way it works around here!)

That isn’t the say that I won’t continue to craft for the Middies – they won’t be getting new clothes otherwise so I definitely will! But with it being winter, I’m more likely to continue to knit for myself over them. But the great thing is that leftover yarn from projects I do for myself wind up being put into a bag for doll-related knits! It’s really a win-win situation (if you don’t think about it too much) because it means that I get hand knits and so do the Middies!

I recently toyed with the idea of adding a third Middie to the doll family (the Alice in Wonderland-inspired Mary Ann was quite high on the list of wants!), but then I realize that it would mean that the handful of clothes that my Middies do have would be split between three dolls instead of two, and that just seemed like a really mean thing to do.

It’s December, which also means that one of my favourite holidays is coming up soon! Now what does that have to do with Middies? Not much, but I was musing a bit about what Blythe-related (and Middie-related!) gifts I’d be putting on my wishlist if I was still doing that. For my Middies though, I do think they need something for the holiday season. Given their meager outfit choices between two of them (poor things), I’m thinking I need to work on the following:

  • Outerwear (coats) and accessories (hats, scarves)
  • Dresses (just more of them, a greater selection)
  • Separates (tops and bottoms – this is literally at the bottom of my list because something about sewing doll-sized pants makes me apprehensive of sewing…)
  • Shoes (to be bought)

Basically, my Middies need a little of everything. And if they felt hot or cold, they’d be shivering in their little plastic shoes right now. Not boots though, because I only have one pair of boots that really fit them (I’m a bad Middie owner…).

Do you own Middies? Do they suffer in comparison to their bigger Blythe sisters on the wardrobe or shoe front? What do your Middies want (or need)?

Happy November! My November has started off amazingly well, what with a local Halloween-ish Blythe meet yesterday on November 1st. November is often one of my favourite months for a myriad of reasons – this year is no exception with the annual occurence of my birthday and the beginnings of a new career/job/work-thing. Being an adult (do adults call themselves this?) has never been equal parts terrifying and exciting, all at the same time.

That say, the meet! It was delightfully Halloween-themed with great decorations, lights, spider (!) cupcakes, and the host’s beautiful Middies. It’s just really fun to see Middies that I don’t own because it’s nice to see dolls in person as opposed to seeing them in photographs. While there are some amazing photographs of dolls out there, I find seeing them in person is always a lot nicer and gives me a better idea of what they truly look like. You never know if someone’s edited the photo (case in point, I definitely used an Instagram filter on this image):

Unfortunately, I didn’t bring any Middies to the meet with me (which gave me the great opportunity to fawn over those that were there!), I brought a haunted little girl and a squid. Reusing customs is a good thing.

A couple weeks ago I wrote about being content with the Blythes that I have, but then the promotional photographs of Melanie Ubique Girl (an October 2015 release) came up. And despite the horrible name (ubique – really???!), although “ubique” is an actual word (for the curious, it is Latin for “everywhere”). But Melanie Ubique Girl’s older sister is Margo Unique Girl and it would have been a touch more fitting if the Middie was named Melanie Unique Girl (MUG 2.0). She is an adorable doll with super cute ash blonde hair and bangs (I’m a big fan of Middie dolls with bangs). And while I may not be in the right situation to buy a new Middie right now, she is super cute and I’d love to add her to the dolly family one day! (Plus – those shoes! the socks! the sunglasses!)

Do you think Melanie Ubique Girl would fit in well with Lydia (Yellow Marshmallow) and Kitty (Jackie Ramone)? And while I really was content with the dolls that I do have, now I’m jonesing for a new dolly. Maybe it’s because she’s super cute, or because I really love MUG 1.0 (but will never ever be able to afford her or justify buying her), or because I just really miss the whole aspect of continuously and obsessively checking tracking online.
